Feedback With -Hacks: PSP/PS Vita UMD's

Time to get opinionated again!  The PSP scene has seen its fair share of tumbleweed the past month or so, but today I am looking for the opinion of -Hacks on something that was previously questioned before the Vita's announcement - the use of UMD's.

Now if you live under a proverbial rock, and have no idea whether the Vita does or doesn't support UMD's, the answer is no.  The Vita instead supports games in a form similar to that of the Nintendo DS.  Otherwise gamers can purchase games from the PS Store or older PSP games that you may have purchased that are compatible.

My question to you, the good people of -Hacks, is "do you think the PS Vita should have supported UMD's?"  With the classic add on of infamous high school teachers, justify your answer.  No one likes a simple yes or no on a topic that's been opened up for discussion.

Personally I am glad they didn't try and cram it in.  The new smaller form of games they have released is much more compact, easy to store, and less easy to damage.  I've seen UMD's scratched right the way around because of dropped PSP's, dust inside the cases making them impossible to play, and the cases cracked from numerous silly accidents.

The UMDs sucked. They were hard for the PSP to read, they chipped their cases, and were almost impossible to clean. It was definitely a good a idea not to have them. Sony should have had the passport thing for the US though. I'm not buying all my old games again! Sony has the greatest potential, but always seems to blow it.

Unless im wrong, the whole passport thing meant you still had to buy your original games anyway. It only gave you a little discount on a game you already own... It was mentioned on here a while backWhen I first saw demos of Uncharted running with PS3-like gfx I was amazed (even though at that time the CPU/GPU RAM decrease had already been anounced). From that moment they started pulling features all over the joint and now it just seems like a PSP with all of the things it should have originally had (excluding CPU/GFX and front/rear touchscreen/pad).I get that hardware manufacturing/assembly cost would have had something to do with it but they shouldn't have gotten even their own hopes upAnd now with this Passport crap and the 3G download bandwidth cap (15mb? or so if I'm correct, unless it has been lifted) there is no way I'm going to consider a Vita until its been ripped apart PSP styleStupid Sony trying to make money again out of people that have allready paid for their overpriced console and overpriced games once. I like Sony, (don't own a 360) but lately they have dropped the ball.

Well i've been hackng psp's for 3 years now and in my experience i would have to say no for UMD support however with hacks/homebrew,etc being made i think having a backup of a UMD in iso/cso format would be still the best way to got with the Vita. Although i've always said that having more than 1 psp was always better than messing with only 1 and not being able test what ever hack you may be using it on.

^ Agreed!  Hopefully the PS Vita is a change of pace for them.  The new games look way better and easy to keep clean/harder to damage.

to me its a little bit of yes and no.. the answer is only no because i rarely play any psp games.but i wish it would have the option or the passport passed so i wouldnt have to re-purchase all the compatible games i already payed for on physical disc.. or have a system like with Blizzard Entertainment where if you lost your discs that if you have your cd-key and register it on there site you can download the online of the game for FREE!!

If the passport program ends up being implemented, I think a lot of people would be happy.Just seems unfortunate that Sony pretty much ends up getting you to pay for a game twice.

My Problem with the No support for the UMD is the fact that the life expectancy for a psp is about 5-6yrs if you take great and I mean great care of it. I have a NES that My wife and I still play (only system I can get her to play). I was not frustrated when the snes came out because I knew I was getting a durable system that I could play for many years to come (which I still fire up Chrono Trigger on). Meaning I could still go back and play my old nes titles. My psp for whatever reason and not hacked stopped playing my UMD's. That means a I hope for backwards compatability that we know is going out the door or some way to rebuy our games a little cheaper. Thats just me. I would love to play crisis core again with a little better graphics even if I had to pay for it again, but not for 30 to 40 dollars. Sony just encourage the ISO seen with this move that is all.

Are USB keys better than CD/DVD ???They are smaller, faster and more reliable...

I like the new form too, but I have a bunch of old UMDs that will be useless

they should release an optional umd drive addon for both the vita and the go

I wouldn't have minded something like that too.  Had plenty of friends who owned the GO! complaining about it.  Would certainly change things up.

I saw some news about a rumor of logitech doing this (for the go as the vita wasnt anounced back then) but they probably stoped because of legal issues with sony, knowing how sony is they probably want you to either rebuy digital version of umd games or they want to release such a thing by themselves to keep all the money.

No, no, no. UMD's were a disaster. Especially the loading times. And the spinning sound, arrrgghhh, that spinning sound!!!However, if they wanted to do it right, the entire PSP catalogue should have been available on PSN right now. Also, there should have been a way to download the games you have paid for, or at least get a good, honest discount for them.I heard they won't be doing that in the US/EU. Which is ridiculous. Though even the Japanese discounts are a joke. You should have been able to get the games you've already bought for like $3, or $5, that's the kind of discount I'm talking about. Not a $5 discount! This is ridiculous!

Unfortunately, Sony is a greedy bastard that wants every penny they can make from you.  I do agree that the ENTIRE PSP catalog should be on PSN/SEN. I think Sony should make some sort of adapter that lets you convert your UMDs into digital versions and not make you pay full price for a game you already bought.  They should not have discontinued UMDs without some sort of decent backup plan for us UMD owners.  Let's face it, the UMD versions of the games are generally much cheaper than the limited amount of digital UMDs they have available. Plus, there is no way to sell the digital version of the game, ur stuck with it.  They should have some method of letting you either sell the digital game back or let you gift it to another PSP/Vita user and revoke ur license to play it.I still prefer a pysical copy of a game that I can do whatever I want with it.  Digital copies have NO resale value.

"Sony's EZXfer....a simple program to conver your UMD's to your PSVita....works with Windows and Mac"
but this is much to hard for them, they NEED to make money off us 3 times over.

The games I want to have on Vita arent even on the PSN network, Like PANGYA & at this point 1/2 my legit games like Fate Stay Night Unlimited CODES isnt compatible...
I bought the 32GB card in hopes of a year from now, it will get hacked bigtime & we will enjoy our ISOs of old PSP games or PKG or W.E & the new titles as well.

Based on the specs for the Vita card (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Vita), it seems to be the way of the future.  UMDs are now an obsolete technology, and to make the Vita backward compatible to support this obsolete technology would have been to alter the form factor of the Vita in order to fit the UMD drive in it.  With the future being everything downloaded or using an easy to store and more resilient data storage medium, designing the Vita with the UMD was really the only choice.Hopefully, the Vita will prove as easy to hack as the 3000 is, so that if you have a 3000, you can simply rip the UMD and copy the ISO to your Vita, and you'll be good to go.

An optional USB UMD device would have been nice, but beyond that UMD is not needed.

When SNES & Genesis came out everyone was pretty much on board that your old games wouldn't work as its a whole different system. (Though SEGA did sell a Master System add-on.) Guess what? People dealt with that reality, moved on & got a new system.I could see if even the downloaded PSP games wouldn't work on a Vita, that's a proper complaint. (And you better get a Vita now before Sony kicks out that fuction. You know its going to happen.) PSPs are crazy cheap & just going to keep getting cheaper. So hold on to your UMD eating PSP or give up & move on.Besides the Vita gets hacked not being able to use your UMDs is going to not be an issue anymore.

UMD's as a source to store data were a bad idea. PSP's size was ideal for runing mini CD/DVD without any casings. But I agree that this kind of delicate medium is also not suitable for a handheld. Thats why I think that removable media in asingle block shape , resistant to external damage is the best solution for handhelds.

It is good they did away with the umd cos games have gotten cheaper and the besides umd uses battery power reducing battery life

Umd's annoyed me. I say Sony have a program where you send in the umd and they put the game onto your account ( or send a code for that game) then allow it on the psp and vita.  This would increase sales of pre owned or old umds as I know I would buy some psp game umds if I knew I could get the digital version by sending it in or something

Hey, sony doesnt have to support an easily pirated system like the UMD.  Nobody said you cant still play those games on the PSP.  Sony doesnt have to support old games if they dont want to, nobody is bitching about not playing ps2 games on the newer non-backwards compatible ps3s.  Keep your psp and when you want to enjoy the old games, drag it out, enjoy the new games on the new  system.

I don't even use umd's on my psp except to rip a new game to my ms. The umd's are backups to me, i play from iso always.
When the Vita is hacked and my psp is getting old i may buy a Vita to carry but will keep my psp in case i need to re-rip something someday.
No big.

The Vita needed to leave the UMDs. The format was a horrible implementation and while I personally haven't had any problems with them, I can see the issues that were being faced. While Sony doesn't need to support their past systems, it is a HUGE selling point. I for one will not buy a Vita until the homebrew community takes a crack at it and adds features. TBH I wish that Sony would just wither away in the US market- If they continue abusing us consumers like this, then I may have to file for a restraining order. :P

I know  that in a way it sucks not being able to play your old games that you bought with money , but the fact is that you are buying a new gen system to play new games , not to continue to play the same old games , I know that sometimes you feel like playing them specially now that the vita is new and doesn't have the library of the psp , but in some months when there are more games most of the people will give a f$%% about this. That's what happened to me when I got my PS3 , I only played FFXII on it and a dragonball game and that's it never used again ps2 games.I'm not saying that it is right not being able to play our games but it isn't the end of the world !!

Hope that they can hack the vita
