Too little too late for Sony? I don't think so... And the head honcho of SCE in-house studios, Shuhei Yoshida, says there's nothing to it but to do it ... and by that I mean embrace the "garage" (or homebrew) developers because we must assimilate to innovate.
Sony will be offering [inexpensive] PS Vita dev kits because "as an industry, we have to support those smaller teams, and let them try out their ideas. Without doing so, the whole industry will stall, in terms of innovation." True that. And it's about time.
But what's inexpensive to Sony? I'm not too sure... I suspect the SDK will still set the average homebrewer back a couple thousand bucks. The SDK will probably have its limitations too; Yoshida "appeared to be encouraging developers to make touch-only games – the types of experiences that dominate the booming smartphone games market."
This is definitely a step in the right direction for SCE ... lets just hope Sony executes it with fashion.

well, PSV should have been a phone, or at least have a phone version; its resolution is a little too low for browsing but I still like to see good browser support.
There is a PSP phone. It's called the Xperia Play. Try to keep up.
it's resolution is a little too low for browsing? it has 200+ppi, what kind of browsing are you doing that you need more pixel density? Plus it does have phone like features; if you get the 3G version you can voice chat and video call anyone else who has a PSV, plus you can use the online version of Google Voice and then there is the homebrew community.
Remember 5 years ago when they said they'd support the PSP homebrew community? Yeah, that went OK......
They did support it... well they had no choice in the matter did they?
Sure, they did support it by patching EVERY possible security hole our hackers had found, and us PSP-3000 users were left without homebrew for more than a year and a half up until the moment when that saint, Total_Noob, released the HEN. They're fucking ridiculous. And before that, they even changed the motherboards of some later PSP-3000 models so that you couldn't hack it anymore. And before that, they had released the 2000, which was also unhackable for quite a while. And BEFORE that, they had released OFW 2.0, which patched all the early 1.5 goodness our devs had made. They've always tried to kill this community. They never aided our homebrew developers. NEVER.They are pathetic, and I really can't believe they're trying to convince us about this bullshit once more.Having said that, I'm definitely getting a Vita early on, but that's because I can't wait to see what the community will be able to pull off with that monster of a device. It will be awesome.
*cough*Bullshit*coughAnd if it is real then it won't be a reasonably sdk at the very least
Fuck you Sony and your bullshit.first learn the correct terms homebrew not "garage".second stop suing homebrew devsthird give back linux on PS3fourth start adding some new fucking features to the systems you produce.then and only then will you ever get the respect and support from your former customers.has anyone else noticed that the PS3 hasn't gotten any new features in quite a while but the PSP would get a new feature every now and then but only after hacked PSP had the feature for months before hand. I guess sony wants to make sure they have plenty of ideas to steal for the PSvita.
Garage is a Japanese term, not American. That's why he use that term.
I'd think if I'm not wrong, the term "garage" is an American term. ie. Silicon Valley, Bill Gates, HP founders, etc. They innovated in the garage and set for their inventions with the venture capitalist, and enterprise their products, etc. This case, I doubt that the word "garage" is used appropriately. For instance, one of you homebrewers developed something and it would be a hit on the console market. That case, is Sony gonna write you as inventor of the Patent, Copyright, etc? Would you get the royalty or the better of becoming an entrepreneur?
No, dumbass. The Japanese use the English term "Garage" as loanword, since it's more easier to pronounce that "Homebrew"
sounds interesting.we will see what will happen
Inexpensive? From what I understood, they were giving it out for free. Anyway, a smart more from Sony...But free would have been nice
hmmmmmm in psvita they had left one feature which is installed in psp 3004 brightness button its not here in psvita i think ti'll become for advance when they release psvita next model more trendy :]
it will probably be adjustable in the settings menu like an iPhone
Touch-only homebrew? NO! I will definitely be installing CFW...
touch only homebrew for a while and then if sony drops homebrew compatibility, then release all of the cfws
You do know that game pirating will happen in some way, right? No console in recent history (or older even) thus far hasn't had it happen to it.
What about the 3DS? I think Nintendo secured everything in that system :(
http://m3adapter.com/The 3DS can use Homebrew and play downloaded games. Check out the link.
Umm..... Acekard 2i compatible with 3DS
I believe s/he is referencing the fact that commercial games for the 3DS have yet to be cracked. I believe this to be a matter of time issue (although the 3DS isn't as popular out of the gate as Nintendo and maybe others were hoping but it's still a large target).
Install cfw.. Good luck with that. Sorry, but it will a good 2 years before the vita sees any of that. The ps3was that way and still isitll be even harder to crack vita
there's gotta be a catch...
Sony FULLY understands the importance of independent development? Hasn’t the last 3-6 months been full of law suits over the people independently rewriting Linux support for their PS3’s that Sony un-rightfully took off the PS3s?“As an industry, we have to support those smaller teams, and let them try out their ideas. Without doing so, the whole industry will stall, in terms of innovation.”Yes, exactly. This is brilliant. When you actually look at the devs and people behind the jailbreaks, the hacks and the methods used to work around the systems that the companies invest millions into in an attempt to make them un-hackable you see very, very talented people. Geohot for example, displayed his work to the world, he showed what he could do and purposely didn’t do things because it was in the better interest of the organization who developed the devices. Eg, his PS3 jailbreak actually didn’t include the necessary hooks to allow disc-less game play because he still wanted to be recognized by Sony and offered a job. And in return he got sued… great job giving the ‘independent developers a helping hand’ there Sony.Besides that the industry will profit off these smaller teams exponentially by giving them limited access and resources and capitalizing on their ideas by using the industry power and money to further grow on the ideas.
They first tried "intimidate to eliminate"... That really didn't work out that well for them...
This could either be very good or very bad. Personally, I don't see Sony going through with this. I mean, look at all the security patches they have made for PSP. I just cant see the PSV being able to run unsigned code right out of the box. Sony will probably NEVER support homebrew Devs. Example: Geohot was sued for attempting to restore the Other OS feature on PS3. And now this??? Yeah right.
This will all be signed. An official SDK is used to make the games.
meh; it's a step in the right direction, but that means that Sony will also be screening the homebrews, so most likely no emulators or useful apps. On the other hand though that means we have a slight insight to what makes the vita tick and might progress the underground homebrew community.
Who said all of it had to go through sony's official outlets?
Why won't there be emulators? Apple screens their apps and there are emulators you can download from their app store.
a hack will come out sooner or later
this is like the 1.0 days where you could run unsigned code by default1.5 removed that and that's where the "hack war" startedeventually people got UMD emualators (backup play) and now they wont live with anything elsei wonder if by doing this, people will leave the PSV (PS Vita alone... i doubt it
i say the homebrew community should start writing entire firmwares that are based off of sony software, but dont use all of sony's code and then a small change,if people did that, even if sony comes out with an update, the firmware can be slightly modified to integrate new games instead of being completely reinstalled, maybe it would use less space in the memory and allow for better internet browsers and software
I tonly took 6 years for them to do this. May even jump onto the Vita scene, if it sports an SDK.
I could bet that the inexpensive SDK will be completely castrated in comparison to the one registered devs will be using.
I personally hope that Sony never even attempts to support homebrew. Here are the reasons behind this.-They would screen the shit out of everything (no emulators/knockoffs/browsers/etc.)-"Innovation comes from limitation" (The homebrew probably won't be very good and there would be no possibility for CFW, Shells, Plugins, etc.)-No more thrill that comes from hacking your psp.Anyways, I just hope that instead of assimilating just turns their giant gaze away from the homebrew community and just lets people do what they want to their PSVs.
You do know that they are selling/giving SDK's, right? That means the homebrew community will know what the Vita can do and how it does it. This would inturn help out other developers without the SDK.
Here's what i'm thinkin, its Sony making a dev kit, which can develop homebrews, going to the direction of the appstore, sony then reviews everything and sign it, then puts it into their appstore for the psv, that works right??
and hope they don't take that away like the "other os" option...witch the hackers brought back lol@sony
QUE VIVA LA COMUNIDAD DEL HOMEBREW !!!!! LONG LIVE FOR THE COMMUNITY OF HOMEBREW!!!! :) 'U GUYS ARE THE BEST NEVER GIVE UP :) FIGHT FOR :)
hiii guyz watch my psp 3004 bricked video herewww_.youtube_.com/watch?v=M3GI...please remove the dashes
im getting a psvita on launch day, i have 300$ to spend on ennything i want, and since there supporting hombrews and giving us development kits then im all in!!! as long as i learn so desperatly how to code!!!!!
Sadly it works very easy.
Sony will ignore hacks etc, Until the sales go bad.
Then the lack of profit will be blamed on the hackers.
Just like the anti-pirate companies say "That every copy that was downloaded would have been bought instead"
Sorry, but i try my games before i consider buying them.
Blow me away with quality and i won't even consider hacking the Vita.
