Make Phone Calls with your PSP! Furikup -- PSP SIP Phone v0.1

Sony officially announced it for the Slim, the Noobz team officially make it happen -- for both Fat and Slims! It's beta software so please report any problems. See readme.html to get started.

Fanjita notes the audio quality needs some work, the interface needs a makeover, and video calls aren't working quite yet. Nonetheless it's usable and demonstrates pure awesomeness. Source code is also available for homebrew developers to advance on. Kudos team!

"Furikup" highlights:

  • It's free software -- in both the beer, and speech senses.
  • You can use it anywhere in the world, subject to signing-up to a suitable local SIP-based voice-over-IP provider and being near a usable wifi access point. e.g. with SIPGate, in the UK, you can call to your PSP from any standard phone (landline or cellphone) for just the standard local call cost, and from PSP to another SIP phone (another PSP or a PC) for free.
  • It runs on both slim and fat PSPs.
  • It uses open standards, for maximum compatibility with other phone systems.
  • You can use a Go!Cam (Chotto Shot), Talkman microphone, or SOCOM-style headset for audio input. (And even if you don't have any of those, you can still send audio from a WAV file in a pinch).

This program allows you to use your PSP as a phone, using Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology. We got a bit bored waiting for Sony to release their PSP phone offering, so we thought we'd do it for them. Such is the freedom of homebrew.

You can use your PSP to make and receive calls to and from other PSPs, or to other VoIP users, or even to standard landline and mobile telephones, depending upon the VoIP service that you use. Calls are generally free, or at least cheaper than standard landline rates - again, depending upon your VoIP provider.

This is an initial release, currently supporting audio-only calls, and with a very basic user interface. But it works, and that's the main thing.

The VoIP engine is implemented as a standalone PRX, with a well-defined interface. As well as using our simple phone application, we encourage other developers to make use of this technology for other applications. We're sure that someone can write a nicer user interface than ours, so please do. There's also scope for plenty of other uses - such as a CFW plugin for calls within the XMB, or teamtalk-style add-ons for games etc. Go wild!

waoooooo, psp homebrew when very far with this, you can do everything with your psp

lol, I made this working with voipdiscount..sound quality was lil crappy, but it worked, I called landline.. and it was free.. lol :DI hope a kikk@$$ GUI will come soon, with number entry, and contacts editor..very well done N00Bz!especially releasing this before the official Skype stuff! (muhaha)great success for the Homebrew scene!!we're very very proud of you! :')

in addition, I tried my usb mic of talkman, and also the chotto cam.. both worked great..the line has some kind on noise, but the voice doesn't skip..I used the SIP settings on the page of voipdiscount..and I just regged a new account there, and I am able to generate testcalls through the PSP without any top-up..the PSP won't quit the call and kinda freezes, if the other party ends the call, if I end the call with the PSP, it works fine, I can even redial.. :Dgreat fun, amazing success for a beta..thanks again N00Bz!

SKYPE IS GOING TO BE ONLY FOR SLIM =(

where do u save it 2 and here do u find it n ur psp

where do you copy the file to?

erm where do u copy the files to?

i tried to work this its not working i put it in my memory stick and then i dont get the xmb memeory part wuts that i got stuck on that

this is great, nice work!! 1st post btw ;)

mmmm, dont think so

yeah your kind of the 5th post retard....excuse me i mean g

Sweet! Out before even officially being out! Nice, thanks!

this is nice, good job!

Awesome, but to sad the battery of the PSP has a to short standby-time i think.Only about 6 hours.....It's a bad standby-time for a mobile phone.

car charger while in car ... other than that i guess youll have to save up for the extra batt

wow what a retarded thing to say. First no phone that needs to be at a wifi access point should be considered "mobile". Not to me anyways. Its basically a wireless phone instead of corded, but you still cant leave the "house". Secondly, who gives a crap about battery life when a huge corporation just got f'd hard by the home brew scene? Get a clue dude, this is awesome news.

Awesome to see that they released this.Me and a friend were actually talking about starting this sort of project a week or so back and going over some of the details before we got started. Not very surprised they beat us to anything. As always good work n00bz, and anyone else involved.

ya sure, and I was planning on making the first custom firmware but dangit, someone beat me to it.....

and i was suppose to plan the psp itself.. haha!

Hmm... VOIPBuster doesnt work. You need a VOIP account somewhere to do this. Can someone link me a free one to use?You need an account to use this application. Read the Readme

free? good luck.

Check out Gizmo, you cannot make free landline calls but should work with any sip client

I looked for a VOIP provider SIP for the USA, but never found a free one as in (phone calling a psp). psp to phone would cost money.

What about PSP tp PC?

ok. go to www.sipphone.com. click member log in. in the left lower hand, click register

i made a little tut in help forums. http://www.psp-hacks.com/forum...

it would be tight if someone could create a videophone program out of this.

hey how can i use this without a cam chotto and socom head set or talkman mic i dont have any of those can you explain to me how to do the audio way

dude.... you really cant.. go buy one..

i got this working half way i can make/get a call from psp to pc or vice versa but there is no sound and the psp freezes, i am using the headset and the sip provider Gizmo......any help or any one got it

same here. It will make calls .. but no audio in/out on call .. rings ... on echotest i can here but thats it .. this is using FWD SIP provider

this program has good intentions, but it is not user friendly and there is no dialing at all, good try, but ill stick to skype. thnx for the work anywayz.

bad ass!

What is the maximum range between 2 PSPs ?Can Morse code be used or something ? Because I don't have a chottoshot camera for my PSP (which I hear it also comes with a mic).Basically, I just need a STOP and a GO sound, recorded on my PC to be heard on the other end. Is it doable ? Through Wifi I mean.

its good but its not skype :(

fanjita is a hobo

the thing is... I've got a cellphone... I can call from it, take my photos with it.. and I guess most of us have a cell phone by now. so I can't belive somone think this is useful. I think it's cool as hell but come on!

yes but can you make free calls with it?

acually I can... =) payed by my work.

oooooo shit that was nice comeback...that burn had to hurt! nice one thesvart lol

what a load of crap. cell phones suck nuttz! i don't want a bill, nor do i want to be desturbed someone when i'm busy! why buy another piece o junk i got my free PSP, i'd rather buy wi-fi for the ride and use the PSP.

If they could somehow incorporated bluetooth with this, I would drop my cellphone in a hardbeat. why pay sprint or someone else, hundreds of dollars a year, if i could do it all with my psp. iphone would suck tea bags.

Why isn't there a software blue tooth to connect ur psp to the phone and phone to cell phone tower?

HEy,relax it's v0.1 theres lots of room for improvement.by the time sony finally releases SKYPE this should come out kickin' butt or even match it toe to toe

wicked nice work n00bs

OMFG.....nuff' said.

finally...

how long do ya wait for the psp to reg to server?? mine still waittin been about 15 mins now any 1 help cheers

your probably using the example sipcfg.ini file. you have to put your own info in it. use this thread, it helped me: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forum...
